Definition

DigitalOcean Kubernetes Service — a fully managed Kubernetes cluster offering. DOKS handles control plane management, upgrades, and HA automatically, so teams focus on deploying workloads rather than managing Kubernetes infrastructure. The control plane is free; customers pay only for worker Droplets.

Real-World Example

An e-commerce platform migrates from a single Droplet to DOKS to handle variable holiday traffic. They deploy their services as Kubernetes pods and configure Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) to scale from 2 to 20 pods during peak events, with DOKS automatically provisioning new worker nodes.

Cloud Provider Equivalencies

These services are all managed Kubernetes offerings from major cloud providers, providing similar functionalities such as automated upgrades, scaling, and control plane management.
